Aardvark Animal Asylum

Human wellbeing

Care for the people
who provide it.

The people sustaining a sanctuary must themselves be sustained. Their wellbeing is a purpose of Aardvark in its own right.

Support is an institutional responsibility.

Meaningful work does not, by itself, meet a person’s needs. Aardvark’s vision is for an organized system of support that makes the wellbeing of its caregivers an institutional responsibility, rather than leaving each person to manage alone.

Belonging and purpose matter, but they cannot substitute for practical support. People deserve care in their own right, not simply because their wellbeing enables them to care for others.

Designed around people’s needs.

We are considering what people need to carry responsibility sustainably: resources to do their work, room for rest and recovery, and support when the demands of care become difficult. Those needs must inform the spaces we create and the way work is organized.

The details of that support system remain part of our development work. Its place in the model is foundational; it is not an optional benefit to consider once everything else is funded.

Capacity has to include the caregivers.

The responsibilities the sanctuary takes on must reflect the support available to the people carrying them. Dedication cannot be the mechanism that makes up for insufficient staffing, resources, or recovery.

Aardvark’s governance, budgeting, and daily decisions must give human wellbeing direct attention alongside animal welfare and ecological stewardship.

In development

A commitment
we are building toward.

Aardvark is in development. The ideas described here guide the work ahead; they are not a claim of services, facilities, or support programs currently available.

As plans develop, we will share more about how these commitments translate into practice.
